KYLÄ/ Village

Anna-Kaisa Vuonokari's exhibition KYLÄ/ Village combines handicrafts, sculpture and sound art with photography, by disassembling, layering and embroidering on images printed and projected on canvas.

The landscape of the Panozero Village in Viena Karelia is the basis for a story in which an old village suffering from depopulation and fearing the overflow of the river, is an image of a world struggling under the threat of destruction. We fear the inevitable change in our living conditions that is already taking place due to the climate change, the loss of the current social system and culture, while struggling to maintain the routines and calmness of everyday life.

The exhibition consists of the photo-based series KYLÄ/ Village and the collection of texts of the same name, which are based on the previous series Hiljaiseloa/ Still (quiet) life (2013-) and Kulkureitti/ Route (2015). The new series breaks away from a documentary view of the village. The works in the exhibition reflect on living in a village community, the longing for freedom, regret for loss, and working under an uncertain future. Storytelling is looking for new layers of time and memories.
